Collection and Use of Personal Information

Personal information such as your name, postal address, email address, and telephone and fax numbers is collected in order for Friends of Canadian Media to communicate with supporters and potential supporters by mail, telephone or email for purposes that include fundraising, updating you on our activities and developments in Canadian broadcasting, and involving you in advocacy initiatives. Financial information such as banking or credit card information is collected in order to process one-time or ongoing contributions. If you contact us, we may keep a record of that correspondence. We will ask you for personal information when you subscribe to our email mailing list, take part in an fax or email campaign, or when you report a problem with this site. We may also occasionally ask you to complete surveys that we use for research. Personal information collected in submissions to The Dalton Camp Award is used to communicate with entrants and identify and notify winners. If you are not an existing supporter, we may obtain your personal information from an organization that has obtained your consent to share your information with other organizations, in which case the purposes for which your information was collected by that organization will continue to apply.

This site logs IP addresses and browser information for purposes of system administration, identifying technical difficulties, evaluating traffic patterns and site usage, and otherwise providing content relevant to site visitors. Information held in aggregate form may also be used to evaluate supporter demographics and involvement in Friends of Canadian Media campaigns. Temporary session cookies removed at the end of your session are used to store information. Persistent cookies may be used to record your preferences or otherwise improve your experience on the site. Information from cookies may be used in aggregate form to determine the number of unique visitors to various parts of the site or improve analysis of site traffic patterns. You can configure your web browser to refuse some or all cookies; however, if you do not accept certain cookies, you may not be able to access all the features of this site.

Disclosure and Transfer of Personal Information

Friends of Canadian Media discloses personal information to third parties such as financial institutions and other third-party contractors for the purposes of processing contributions, maintaining internal records, and communicating with you. To support Friends of Canadian Media’s ongoing efforts to advance our cause by attracting new supporters, we occasionally share postal and/or telephone contact information (never financial information or your email address) on a selective basis with third party agencies to enable you to receive communications regarding membership, services or products from other organizations, unless you withheld your permission for us to do so at the time we originally collected your information, or you subsequently advised us that you did not wish your contact information shared with others. Personal information is not shared directly with these other organizations, which receive your personal information only if you respond to a communication.

We will otherwise release personal information only with your express consent, unless releasing such information is required by law or we have reason to believe that disclosing such information is necessary to contact or bring legal action against someone who may be causing injury to or interference with Friends of Canadian Media’s rights or property, Friends of Canadian Media supporters, or anyone else that could be harmed by such activities. Where Friends of Canadian Media releases your personal information to third parties, Friends of Canadian Media first requires them to agree to use such personal information in accordance with this Privacy Policy and Canadian privacy laws.

Under Canadian privacy laws, you have the right to inquire whether Friends of Canadian Media holds personal information about you, access such personal information, and correct any personal information about you that is inaccurate. If your information changes or becomes inaccurate, or if you would like Friends of Canadian Media to remove your information from our records, please send a request using one of the contact methods listed below and include your name, address, email address or telephone number, and supporter PIN, if known, so that we can identify you.

Accessing, Modifying, or Removing your Information

You hereby consent that Friends of Canadian Media may collect, use, store, maintain, transfer, and remove your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you prefer that we not use or disclose your information for any or all of the purposes specified in this Privacy Policy or at the time of collection, you may notify us at any time. In particular, Friends of Canadian Media will honour all requests not to disclose personal information to other organizations, whether made at the time the information is provided or subsequently and will promptly remove your name from our mailing lists upon request. If you do not notify us, we will consider you to have consented to our continued use and disclosure of your information for the specified purposes.

Information Security and Integrity

When you provide personal information to this site, such information is protected by secure sockets layer (SSL) encryption and stored on secured third party servers located in one or more of Toronto, Ontario and Vancouver, British Columbia, or in other locations governed by this Privacy Policy. Friends of Canadian Media takes reasonable steps to protect your personal information from loss, misuse, or other unauthorized uses, and to remove your personal information when it is no longer required for its intended purposes. Friends of Canadian Media cannot, however, guarantee that loss, misuse, or unauthorized use will never occur and makes no representations or warranties to this effect.
