FRIENDS supporters across the country continue to amaze and inspire me. Their energy enables us to defend CBC and fight for strong Canadian journalism and storytelling.

2018 in review: 12 months of people power

In 2018, our supporters came together to achieve some remarkable victories for Canadian culture and for our national public broadcaster:
  • 19,000 people signed our petition to save CBC’s physical archive from destruction. And guess what? We won!
  • For years, FRIENDS has called for an end to patronage appointments at CBC. This year, our hard work paid off, when CBC appointed its new president and board members through an independent, arm’s length process. We did it!
  • Our research revealed that the government of Canada spends more subsidizing Facebook and Google than it spends on the entire CBC! We’ve been pushing hard to close a multibillion-dollar tax loophole that is bankrupting Canadian journalism, and our hard work is starting to pay off. In 2018, both the federal NDP and the Conservative Party of Canada endorsed our sensible proposal. We’re building momentum!
  • FRIENDS supporters contributed to four full-page ads in the Globe and Mail, the Hill Times, and Le Devoir.
  • We visited 10 swing ridings to launch grassroots campaigns to make CBC a prominent issue in the next federal election.

Real change isn’t won in Ottawa’s back rooms. People power at the local level is our best chance at achieving what we want, and with 364,000 supporters across the country, FRIENDS is in a unique position to make a massive impact in 2019.

Looking Forward to 2019

Canadians deserve a strong CBC that can counter Facebook’s propaganda machine with trustworthy, truthful, Canadian journalism. And we deserve a well-funded CBC that can afford to produce top-notch Canadian drama that reflects our society and pushes us to build a better country. We shouldn’t have to settle for whatever Netflix wants us to watch.

These huge companies have all the money and lobbying power in the world, but they can’t vote. We can, and if politicians want our vote, they’ll have to earn it!

Political leaders will see that addressing our issues will help them get elected. Our grassroots campaigns will make that reality impossible to ignore. These campaigns are hugely effective.

2018 gave us a taste of what we can achieve together. Here's to 2019 and the success it will bring!
Stand with us in the defense of Canada's cultural and economic interests.
